Out-of-Province Driver's Licenses
If you are a new resident in Alberta, you must obtain an Alberta driver’s license within 90 days of moving here. This applies even if you travel outside Alberta during that period.
You may continue to use a valid license from your home jurisdiction if you are working temporarily in Alberta, are a visitor, or are a full-time student.
How to Get an Alberta License
When applying to exchange your license, please bring the following:
- Your current, valid out-of-province or out-of-country driver's license.
 - Proof of Alberta residency (e.g., a current utility bill, rental agreement, or pay stub with your name and address).
 - A secondary piece of identification (e.g., Passport, Birth Certificate, or a signed bank card).
 - For international drivers, please also bring your passport with immigration documents.

License Exchange Details
A valid license from another Canadian province or the United States can typically be exchanged for an equivalent class (e.g., Class 5, 6, or 7) without testing. However, medical and vision requirements must be met. A medical report is required for Class 1, 2, and 4 licenses and may be requested for other classes if you have a medical condition that could affect your driving ability.
